Coach Andy Ma

Coach Ma's charges have succeeded from the local to international level.

Ma brings his own level of success to Penn with the start of his 10th. season as Head Coach. He sharpened his craft after spending the previous 15 years as President and Head Fencing Coach at the Fencing Academy of South Jersey in Cherry Hill. During Ma's tenure, the program has trained eight US National Fencing Team members, five in saber, three in foil, six national champions and one world champion. Seven of his South Jersey fencers have competed at the University of Pennsylvania, and 20 have gone on to Ivy League fencing programs.

    Since 1997, Ma has also produced more than 200 medalists in United States Fencing Association (USFA) national and NAC competitions, World Cup competitions, and World Championships.

    Internationally, Ma coached the United States Cadet Saber team from 2003 to 2008, and in both 2005 and 2008 he was selected Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee. President of the USFA's South Jersey Division, he is a certified USFA fencing director and earned the highest competitive rating of "A" by the USFA in Saber in 1992.

    In addition to his work at the Fencing Academy, Ma served two stints as assistant coach at Penn, the first from 1994-96, and the second from 2005-06.

    During his first stint, Penn won the Ivy League Women's Team Championship twice, in 1994 and 1995, as he trained a first-team men's saber All-America and a second-team men's foil All-America.

    Ma was also an assistant coach at Ohio State University from 1989-91, helping the Buckeyes win the Men's and Women's Big Ten titles in 1990-91, and from 1985-88 he was fencing coach at the Beijing (China) Sports University where he helped develop China's junior national saber champion who later competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.

Coach Adi Nott

Nott is a 2009 graduate of Notre Dame, where she was a four-time NCAA Fencing All-American (foil). In addition to also captaining the team during her four seasons, Nott was named an ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2008.

Not only successful in the collegiate ranks, Nott also competed on the U.S. Women’s Junior World Championship team in 2006 and the U.S. Women’s Foil Team in 2011. She still competes at the Div. 1 level both nationally and internationally. She is in high demand as she has also coached at four different fencing clubs, and it is currently an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor.

    After 3 years at Penn she has helped mold the Quaker's men's and women's foil squad as one on the best in the collegiate ranks.

    Nott recently completed a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice.

Coach Slava Danilov

A professional fencing coach and master, Danilov brings 41 years of fencing experience from all different levels, ranging from high school coaching to fencing with the Kharkov Regional Ukrainian and Soviet Union National Teams. He most recently prior to Penn, Danilov served as the head coach at Ridge High School and Morris Fencing Club in New Jersey. His other coaching experiences include the Fencing Academy of South Jersey, Medeo Fencing Club & School, as well as coaching at Kharkov fencing club "Echo" in Ukraine. In addition, Danilov was also an assistant professor in physical education at Kharkov State Pedagogical University.

During his coaching career, Danilov has led the Ridge High School fencing team to the 2009 New Jersey High School Championship title and a Vice-Championship in 2014. Over the year, his students have seen a breadth of success including a World Junior Championship silver medal & World Championship silver medal, a title as Champion of Ukraine, a gold medal at the Division IA Summer National Championship, a NAC Champion, and third place at the Youth Summer National Championship.

    In his own right, Danilov has been widely successful. As a full-time fencer, he was apart of the 1985 Champion of the World University Games epee team, placed seventh with his team at the World Championships in ’94 and was then crowned the ’95 European Cup Champion with his team. In ’96, Danilov was a World Cup bronze medalist and a gold medalist in the International World Championships Competition in Brussels.

    Danilov holds a BA in Physical Education along with a Master’s in Sport Psychology. He is also a Master of Sports International Class in Fencing, which is the highest classification in sports in the former USSR.

Coach Randall LeMaster

LeMaster came to Philadelphia from Ft. Myers, Florida, were he served as owner and manager of Salle de Napoli, a fencing training facility in Naples, FL. During his time at Salle, his pupils were regular fixtures among the top 16 at the North American Cup while several received national rankings from the Y-14 to Vetern age groups. LeMaster holds a director's rating in epee, foil and saber. He honed his skills as a fencer under the tutelage of Michael Morgan, who has over 50 years of fencing experience and was a long-time student of Maîtres Lajos Csiszar and Bella De Tuscan. In 2006 Coach LeMaster was nominated as the USFA Development Coach of the Year. An honor he lost out to Coach Andy Ma.

LeMaster previously spent time at Penn during the summers of 2005, 2005 and 2010, when he worked as a dorm advisor and coach for the Penn Fencing Camp. Working the camp, he assisted coaching in training and conditioning for all three weapons. He holds certificates from the USFA Coaches College and USFCA.

    LeMaster began his coaching career at the Ft Myers Fencing Club in 1999. Prior to coaching, LeMaster served in the Navy, and following his honorable discharge worked as a technician and manager with one of the nations leading installers of home and business automation.
